In the midst of the busy outdoor living building season it is easy to get lost in the daily tasks of project management. The job becomes a juggling act of construction schedules and product deliverables blurring the vision of what we really are, designers. If we were just builders we would hang a sign in the window ‘you draw it, we’ll build it’, but instead we methodically pour over the details of fire pit locations to increase efficiency, align pergolas to increase shade cover and built spaces that defy the status quo. While every design may not make the cover of architectural digest the emphasis is always on what I like to call ‘deliberate decisions’. The idea is simple, identify problems (whether they are in structure, function or appearance) and make decisions that fit the aesthetics and budget of the space.
